Blast in Sri Langa - 62 Killed

Colombo, Sri Lanka: At least 62 people, including two Chinese nationals, were killed and 40 others injured today in an accidental blast of explosives stored in a police station in Eastern Sri Lanka for road construction in the region.The blast occurred at the Karadiyanaru police station, "where the explosives were kept for safety,"
the military said. Most of those killed were policemen.The explosives that detonated were meant for road construction in the region and belonged to a Chinese company, Military spokesman Udaya Medawalla said.About 60 policemen and two Chinese nationals lost their lives in the blast, he said.The blast occurred when the workers from the Chinese company were shifting the explosives kept in containers in the police station to a vehicle, Medawalla said.Shortly, the vehicle carrying the explosives exploded and as a result of the detonation, three other containers too blew up, the spokesman said.Officials said that 30 of the 40 injured have been admitted to Batticaloa hospital.news from ndtv.

INS (Indian Navy Ship) arrives in Sri Lanka port


The Indian Navy's amphibious warfare vessel Indian Navy Ship Magar arrived at Sri Lanka's Eastern port of Trincomalee(10.04.2010) on a goodwill mission, Sri Lanka Navy said.According to the Navy, the Indian Navy Ship Magar, a landing ship tank with a Chetak helicopter on board, is scheduled to stay in Sri Lanka for a few days. It carries a crew of 20 officers and 235 sailors on board.During its stay, over 100 rookie officers of Sri Lanka Navy will be trained by the ship's crew from Monday on areas ranging from navigation, communication, seamanship, Naval knowledge, damage control and fire fighting.Sri Lanka Navy in reciprocation has arranged a special visit programme for the ship's crew.The ship's visit is aimed at strengthening the bilateral defence ties between the two countries.

Warship may have struck mine - South Korea Defense Minister

Defense Minister Kim Tae-young said there was no sign of a direct attack from rival North Korea, but military authorities have not ruled out North Korean involvement in the sinking of the Cheonan late Friday night.An explosion ripped the 1,200-ton ship apart during a routine patrol mission near Baengnyeong Island west of the peninsula. Fifty-eight crew members, including the captain, were plucked to safety; 46 remain missing.The Joint Chiefs of Staff said the exact cause would remain unclear until the ship is salvaged after the rescue operation is over. On Monday, mothers beat their chests with grief as divers went down to search for survivors, returning to report hearing no sounds inside the underwater wreckage.Kim, grilled by lawmakers on what happened Friday night, said the ship may have struck a mine left over from the war or deliberately dispatched from the North.
